The studies are less excited. They do not say music is bad for you. They say it depends on what you are doing, and that the people listening are often wrong about which side of the line they are on.

Does concentration music actually help you focus?

Not on average. The broadest attempt to answer the question is a meta-analysis by Kämpfe, Sedlmeier and Renkewitz in Psychology of Music, which pooled 97 studies of adults. In the 66 that compared background music with silence, the weighted average effect was r = 0.03, which is about as close to nothing as a number gets. The authors argued that this null result came from specific effects cancelling each other out: music helped some kinds of task and hurt others.

A newer 2022 systematic review by Cheah and colleagues in Music and Science looked at 95 papers and 154 experiments across memory, language, reasoning, attention and processing speed. It found a general harmful effect on memory and language tasks, only one positive effect, from instrumental music, and no effect at all in most comparisons. One caution: that review counted which way each result pointed rather than pooling sizes, so it tells you direction, not strength.

Why do lyrics make reading harder?

Because reading and lyrics compete for the same equipment. When you read, you are quietly processing words. A song with words in it hands your brain a second stream of language it did not ask for, and your attention keeps checking it.

The best numbers come from a 2018 Bayesian meta-analysis of 65 studies by Vasilev, Kirkby and Angele in Perspectives on Psychological Science. Across 36 studies, music of any kind lowered reading comprehension slightly, a Hedges g of minus 0.19. Lyrical music and intelligible speech caused the biggest disruption, with lyrical music at g of minus 0.35. For instrumental music, the authors reported an effect very close to zero. Reading speed barely changed at all, so people read at the same pace and simply took in less.

Psychologists call the wider pattern the irrelevant sound effect: sound you are trying to ignore still gets into short term memory, and sound that keeps changing, like words or a busy melody, gets in more than a steady hum.

Reading and lyrics compete for the same attention, the studies suggest.

Which tasks does background music help, hurt or leave alone?

Here is every task type this page could find a pooled or controlled figure for, in one place. None of these studies recruited people with brain fog.

Two patterns stand out. Anything that leans on words or memory, reading a report, revising, learning a new system, tends to go slightly worse with music on. Anything that leans on effort or mood, a run, a pile of filing, an hour of data entry, goes the same or slightly better. The Cheah review adds that difficult tasks were harmed while easy ones were not, and that introverts were harmed while extraverts were not. The Kämpfe analysis also found that the tempo of the music pulled along the tempo of what people did, which is good news for the treadmill and less good news for careful proofreading.

The routine work row deserves its asterisk. In a 2005 field study by Teresa Lesiuk, 56 software developers at four Canadian companies rated their mood and work quality lowest in the week music was removed, and took longest on tasks then. It was not a controlled trial, and the ratings were their own, but it is a fair picture of how music feels at a desk.

Routine, repetitive tasks are where background music was least likely to get in the way.

What the studies found for your kind of task

Pick the kind of task. It does not seem to rescue your reading. In a 2014 study by Nick Perham and Harriet Currie at Cardiff Metropolitan University, people read under four conditions: quiet, lyrical music they liked, lyrical music they disliked, and music without lyrics. Comprehension was best in quiet and with instrumental music, and worst with lyrics, whether people liked the song or not. The participants believed their own favourite music had helped. Their scores disagreed.

That gap between how music feels and what it does is the theme of the whole field. The most famous example is the Mozart effect, the idea that a sonata makes you cleverer. A 2010 meta-analysis by Pietschnig, Voracek and Formann in the journal Intelligence found the effect was larger in the original research group’s own studies than in anyone else’s, found signs of publication bias, and concluded there was little evidence left for a specific Mozart effect. The University of Vienna summary put it more simply: the music will not make you smarter. It may still make the afternoon nicer, which is not nothing.

What do people with brain fog report about music while working?

These are reports, not findings. On 17 October 2026 this page read 74 comments across two threads: 49 in a September 2024 r/covidlonghaulers thread asking whether anyone else now struggled to listen to music, and 25 in a May 2026 r/CasualConversation thread about music while reading and studying. The long COVID thread leaned heavily one way. The general thread was split.

In the long COVID thread, one commenter said they used to sing along while entering invoices but now could focus on the lyrics or the work, not both, and that a few calm tracks helped only to take the edge off office noise; what they really wanted was quiet. Another described music as so tiring for more than two years that a couple of songs would leave them crashing, and said that by two years and eight months into recovery they could listen again without effects. Others described cancelling a streaming account because music was too much stimulation, and wearing earplugs during bad spells. One person played only meditation sounds through noise cancelling headphones, partly to block jarring noises at home. And one commenter cut against the pattern, saying music worked as a kind of meditation on better days, though not during a flare.

In the general thread, people described almost exactly the split in the studies. One said lyrics were fine for washing up or emails but stole their attention with dense reading. Several said familiar songs sat in the background while new ones pulled them in. One used music mainly to drown out noise on a bus. And a fair number simply needed silence to read.

Where the accounts agree with the research: lyrics and reading do not mix well, and calm, familiar, wordless sound is easier to work alongside. Where they go further: many people in the long COVID thread described music itself as draining, not just distracting, which none of the studies above measured, because none of them recruited people with brain fog. That is a real gap in the evidence, not a finding.

Is concentration music a fix for brain fog, and when should you see a doctor?

No. Nothing on this page tested music as a treatment for brain fog, and it should not be read that way. At best, the studies describe how background sound changes performance on a task in healthy adults.

Volume is the one plain safety point. The WHO and ITU safe listening standard uses a reference of 80 decibels for 40 hours a week for adults, so long work sessions through headphones at high volume use that up quickly.

Brain fog that is new, getting worse, or affecting work, driving or safety needs a doctor, not a playlist. The NHS page on long COVID lists problems with memory and concentration among its common symptoms and advises speaking to a GP when symptoms are worrying. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or weakness on one side needs emergency help.

If you came here from the headphones aisle of the internet, our look at binaural beats and concentration covers the tones marketed for focus, and the page on meditation and brain fog sets out what those studies measured. For the tiredness side of the problem, the cognitive fatigue page explains why thinking can wear out faster than it used to, and our guide to what causes brain fog sets out the causes a GP can look for.

Frequently asked questions

Is lo fi music good for concentration?

No study on this page tested lo fi as a genre.
